Tadpole adventures: Week 1

Tadpole adventures at Chater On Tuesday we were surprised to see something exciting in Nursery and Reception classrooms.  Each class now has a tank of frogspawn.  Mrs Spinage has collected it from a friend's pond.  It was laid in a pond by a female frog.  Each egg is a black spot inside a ball of jelly. Here is a picture of the frogspawn in class on Tuesday.  Can you see how the 'black spot' now looks like it has changed shape?  This is the tadpole beginning to grow. After a day the tadpoles came out of the eggs and rested for the day on the bottom of the tank.   The next day they started swimming around.    You can see some feathery gills at the head end.  This is how the tadpole breat hes under the water.  We have begun to feed them some cucumber.  The tadpoles seem to like it! Maybe you can find out more about tadpoles and how they will eventually turn into frogs.  Check back on this blog to see how they grow and change. In the meantime here are some things you could tal

Do you like to eat potatoes?  How do you like them?  Boiled, mashed, roasted, baked or as chips?  Did you know that crisps are made from potatoes? This week we have busy planting potatoes at school.  We have put them into growbags and watered them.  We chose a sunny spot for the bags. We planted two varieties, Babino and Casablanca. We are looking forward to watching them grow and learning more about them. Here are a few potato facts you might enjoy.... Potatoes were first grown in  P eru by the Incas. Potatoes are 80% water. Potato plants are usually pollinated by insects such as bees. The potato was the first vegetable to be grown in space. Can you find out any more fun facts about potatoes?
